Mazarron PDF Print E-mail

MazarronTo the south of the region of Murcia and close to Cartagena are the coastal developments of Mazarron, some inland and some within the port area itself, called Puerto de Mazarron, just 6 kilometres from the town of Mazarron.

Moorish Mazarron is now a fully developed tourist attracting location, its silver, lead and copper mines have been abandoned as completely exhausted in favour of the tourist industry, fishing and tomato growing industries. The artistic heritage of Mazarron town includes the Mudejar Church of San Andres dating from the 16th century; the Church of San Antonio built in the 17th century, the 18th century Convent of la Conception and the ruins of the 15th century Velez Castle.

The port area of Mazarron has retained its busy fishing fleet. Along the coast is the lagoon known as the Albufera de las Moreras, a natural beauty spot providing a habitat for many species of migratory birds. Also along the coast from Mazarron is the area called Bolnuevo, where the wind, water and time have carved the rocks into unusual formations closer to the realms of dreams than to those of reality. A good day out!
